The Future of Facial Recognition

The Future of Facial Recognition

Face recognition is one of the applications of Deep Learning which has witnessed successful practical implementations within a short span of time. From secure transactions to facial detection, the future of facial recognition looks bright and we’re currently at the beginning of the facial recognition revolution.

Currently, the applications focus moreover strengthening the security systems but its potential applications can bring a change to many other services. Cloud computing, edge processing, and Artificial Intelligence have played a crucial role in the advancement of computer systems. Here, we will be listing out some prime applications and impact of facial recognition.

Facial recognition fetches data in the form of patterns by using the image, captured through a video or a photo. The distances b/w the mouth, nose, and eyes are accurately scanned with the help of thousands of infrared dots. The collected distances form a digital algorithm. The algorithm is then scanned and compared to the algorithm stored in the database to obtain the results.

Emotion Detection:

Sounds interesting, however, the feature currently is not 100% accurate, therefore, it is under a developing phase. Through emotion detection, one can not only detect an individual but will also be able to detect their emotions and feelings. The global application is hard but impressive.

A middle school in China is already developing an emotion detection system which solely works by scanning the pupils. The results carry emotional state of the person; happy, sad, frustrated, fearful and angry, etc. The system can be useful to observe class interests and allow the syllabus to be tailored according to the comfort and understanding of students. Besides, facial recognition can easily be configured to monitor attendance at offices or schools.

Not only in schools, but it is quite useful to enhance services by determining the satisfaction level of customers or the emotional state of employees at work, and so on. Facial recognition helps us to deal with the “Who” data but with the combination of Emotion Detection it can easily give away “Why” data; with which one can develop a better understanding of people’s reaction.

Age Detection:

Facial recognition is catching up with continuous development to make Age Detection better and better. Besides serving the demographics collection, age detection can be helpful in certain environments.

Consider a shopping store where a system can flag a warning if a young person tries to purchase an age-restricted product (for example cigarettes, alcohol, and stuff like that). Not only in stores but certain age-restricted websites can take benefit of the technology by allowing appropriate people to get access to it (By filtering out who don’t meet the age requirements). Services can improve their legal responsibilities by reducing the possibility to offend customers.

Secure Payments:

Whether you go out for dinner or to shop some goods, real-time payment has never been easier due to Facial Recognition. Although not very common among the societies yet, but it has numerous benefits to offers as transactions can take place within seconds and it’s also a secure way of making a transaction.

In China, food-retailers have already implemented a feature where once registered, you can pay for your food by just smiling at the kiosk. A similar procedure can be followed by traveling services to ensure a rapid and secure payment method, which can make life way easier.

Improved Security:

In the future, the power of facial recognition will be able to do much more. Law enforcement agencies are also looking forward to deploying gadgets based on facial recognition. CCTV cameras are being integrated with Facial Recognition technology to widen the surveillance capabilities; to scan through the footages to reach criminals faster and to avoid terrorist attacks. In China, police are using FR integrated sunglasses to spot criminals and to counter possible crimes.

Facial acknowledgment can be a major piece of a cutting edge organization’s security technique, with access control frameworks now ready to spot individuals to approve or blacklist candidates at the workplace accordingly.

The human face has already become a perfect source of data transmission, and we are yet to witness more opportunities. Whether you want to pay online, open a bank account or go through security points at the Airport, you will be meeting FR featured systems everywhere. Accordingly, the impact will be much greater in the near future.
